Cooling Options
Heatsink & Fans
Two heat sink options — Standard and High-Performance — pair with Standard and Gold fan variants, both selected based on processor TDP and system configuration. Up to 7 hot-swappable fans are supported.
- STD HSK is required for CPU Base TDP <=150W
- HPR HSK is required for CPU Base TDP >150W
- STD Fan is required for CPU Base TDP<=205W
- HPR Gold (VHP) Fan is required for CPU Base TDP>205W
The "Thermal Solution Configuration" section of the manual below offers further detail on system cooling.
Memory Population Rules
Following these general memory configuration guidelines helps ensure optimal system performance — deviating from them may cause boot failures, unresponsiveness during memory configuration, or reduced available memory.
Memory Rules
- Maximum 8 DIMMs per processor and 16 DIMMs in total.
- Supports DDR5 registered DIMMs (RDIMMs) up to 4800 MT/s.
- All DIMMs must be DDR5.
- Memory mixing is not supported for different DIMM capacities.

Expansion Slots
Six riser configurations are available, each with its own slot mix — some offering PCIe Gen5 slots, most offering Gen4. Configuration 1 stands out as the only one giving access to all three PCIe slots, while Configuration 4 is unique in supporting both rear drives and a PCIe slot. Note that not every configuration includes PCIe x16 slots.
-
1 CPU Configuration: Up to 2 PCIe slots (1 x16 Gen4 + 1 x8 Gen5)
-
2 CPU configuration: Up to 3 PCIe Gen4 slots (1 x16 Gen4 + 2 x8 Gen4) or up to 2 PCIe Gen5 slots (1 x16 Gen5 + 1 x8 Gen5)

Networking & Storage Adapters
Two networking options — the OCP Mezz 3.0 (running on x8 PCIe 4.0 lanes) and the LOM with 2x 1GB ports — can be used simultaneously, helping preserve the limited 3 PCIe slots on this 1U rack server. The OCP card supports up to 4 ports at speeds up to 25GbE.
Networking Options:
-
LOM: BCM5720 LAN controller with 2x 1GB ports
-
OCP Port Type: BT/SFP/SFP+/SFP28/SFP56
-
OCP Max Ports: 4
-
OCP Max Port Speed: 25GbE
Storage Controllers
This Gen16 Dell server supports both PERC 11 and PERC 12 cards, with fPERC installation recommended to preserve a PCIe slot for RAID control. Standard across Gen16 systems is boot device support via the BOSS-N1, which holds 2x M.2 SSD drives in its own dedicated riser and slot — capable of hosting either the boot OS or hypervisor. With 480GB or 960GB drive options available, storage capacity stays generous.
