Processor, Heatsink & Fans
Processors & Heatsink
Configurations support up to two 4th Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable or Intel® Xeon® Max processors, with core counts reaching as high as 56 per processor.
This Dell PowerEdge R760 rack server offers three heat sink variants, chosen according to system build and CPU TDP — processors exceeding 250W TDP move to liquid cooling.
-
STD HSK ≤ 165 W (supports only 2.5-inch drives and non-GPU configuration)
-
2U HPR HSK 165 W–350 W (supports 2.5-inch drives and non-GPU configuration)
-
L-type HSK Supports all GPU/FPGA configurations
Liquid Cooling
Any Processors TPD above 250W will need the liquid-cooled system installed.
CPUs 9480, 9470, 8470Q and 6458Q are supported only in liquid cooling configuration.
Cooling comes in two forms on this Dell Gen16 server: air-cooled or Direct Liquid Cooled. Adding DLC to the CPUs eliminates the rear VGA port, with restoration possible at either the front or rear — though the rear placement consumes a PCIe slot.
Fans
All GPU/FGPA cards require 1U L-type HSK and GPU shroud.
GPU configuration supports only High performance Gold (HPR Gold) fan.
Six hot-swap fans ship standard with every system, with the exact type determined by CPU TDP and build configuration, similar to heat sink logic. The supported fan types are detailed below.
Up to six hot-swap fans
- Standard (STD) fans
- High-performance Silver (HPR Silver) fans
- High-performance Gold (HPR Gold) fans
- For TDP that are 250W+ requires DLC
Rear Drive Fans
Adding a rear drive to the Dell PowerEdge R760 requires the High-Performance Gold fan — unless the CPU already runs at 270W TDP or above.
Rear drive cages come paired with an additional fan and an airflow baffle for proper thermal support, both included when the rear drives are ordered.
Rear drives supported on the 12 LFF and the 24 SFF Chassis.
Supported Memory
Up to 32 DDR5 RDIMMs at 4400 MT/s (2DPC), or up to 4800 MT/s when limited to 16 DDR5 RDIMMs (1DPC), give in-memory workloads a meaningful performance lift.

Storage Controllers Options
Storage Controllers
The fPERC solution is a standout among Dell's RAID controller options, delivering a base RAID hardware controller without touching a PCIe slot — made possible by its compact form factor and high-density connector to the base planar.
PERC11 and PERC12 controllers are both compatible with this system, and a dual-controller setup — one fPERC paired with one APERC card — is also an option. Check the manual's cabling section for the supported configuration details.

BOSS-N1 Hot-Swap Boot Options
As with most Dell servers, boot capability comes via 2x M.2 NVMe drives on the optional BOSS-N1 card, with its exact placement shifting depending on which risers or rear drives are configured.
Powering down isn't needed to install the BOSS-N1 card carrier — that step is only required for the BOSS-N1 controller card module itself.

Networking Adapters Options
This Dell Gen16 R760 rack server limits NIC support to either the LOM card or the MIC card — not both — though the OCP 3.0 slot remains available separately, regardless of which one you pick.
LAN on Motherboard (LOM)
On the Dell R760 the standard LOM is Optional and supports 2x1Gb with BCM5720 LAN controller.
Management Interface card (MIC)
Installing a Dell Data Processing Unit (DPU) card brings the MIC into play as a requirement, and since it commandeers the LOM ports, a separate LOM card is off the table.
Open Compute Project (OCP) 3.0
- 1GbE x 4
- 10 GbE x 2
- 10 GbE x 4
- 25 GbE x 2
- 25 GbE x 4
An x16 card dropped into the OCP 3.0 slot will run at x8 instead, a constraint of this system board. Port counts differ too — the LOM caps at two, while the OCP 3.0 slot supports cards with up to 4 ports.
Expansion Slots
PCIe options run up to 8x Gen4 or 4x Gen5 slots, spread across 4 riser slots supported by 15 riser cards forming 14 configuration variations. Take a careful look through the table below, and reach out for support if the riser setup needs clarifying.

Riser Cards
GPU Options
Accelerator capacity reaches two double-wide 350W units or six single-wide 75W units. GPU installation requires switching out the default air shroud for the GPU version, along with a filler component whenever a single-width GPU card or vacant riser slot is present.
All GPU/FGPA cards require 1U L-type HSK and GPU shroud.
- Double Width (DW) GPU only supported on Riser Configurations 3-2, 5-2, or 10-2
- RC 5-2: Supports DW GPU only on slot 7
- RC 10-2: Only supports a single processor configuration.
- RC 10-2: Supports DW GPU only on slot 2.
